ON THE WATER COURSES
Instructors
All on the water courses are taken by
qualified RYA Instructors. These instructors may be assisted
by assistant instructors who are working towards their full
instructor qualification. All instructors hold a valid first
aid certificate but we do not intend that they should demonstrate
their skills!
Overseeing and responsible for the
courses is an RYA Senior Instructor.
All TSTA instructors and others
assisting in the running of the on the water courses are volunteers
and receive no fees for the tuition they provide.
Introduction to Sailing Course
This TSTA course is aimed at the
beginner and can lead to the award of a RYA Dinghy Level 1
qualification.
The RYA Dinghy Level 1 begins at the beginning!
No previous sailing knowledge or experience is required.
You will learn how to rig and sail a
boat in all
directions and have an awareness of launching and recovering a small
boat. When you attain Level 1 you will have the skills
to sail in light winds, under supervision.
To help introduce
novices to sailing, the TSTA even has its own specially designed
land drill boat the "Corporal Jones". This enables
novices to learn the skills of tacking and gybing,
with out fear of getting wet!
Once afloat, the dinghies used by the TSTA are ideal
for learning to sail.

River Tay.
Improvers Course
This course is designed as a natural
progression for those who have completed the Introduction to Sailing
Course or for those who would like to build on previous experience.
This course can lead to the award of a
RYA Dinghy Level 2 qualification. The course will enable you to
improve your sailing and decision making skills in good weather and sea conditions. Capsize recovery and essential safety
procedures are features of this course.
For details of this year's
courses please click the "Dates and Fees" link - above left.
Safety on the Water
When on the water, all
students must wear a buoyancy aid. These, together with
waterproof clothing, can be provided by the TSTA. At
this time the TSTA do not provide wet suits or footwear.
You will be advised what items of clothing to bring in your course
joining instructions.
When students are on the
water, a safety boat is always present, crewed by persons trained in
safety and rescue techniques.
However, as with all
outdoor activities, there are some physical demands that are
inherent in the sport. If you are concerned about your
suitability to participate, then please email
training@taysail.org with
your contact details and someone will get back to you.
Life after Dinghy Level 2
After you attain your Level 2
Certificate - then what? Well you can go and buy your own
boat and do your own thing or perhaps find a crewing position on
boats sailing on the River Tay from Broughty Ferry, Tayport or Wormit. A
yacht marina is also established at Arbroath.
TSTA course participants are welcome to
have the continued use of the TSTA dinghies and the facilities of
the RTYC, providing they become members of the RTYC. There are
procedures covering the use of the TSTA boats and a charge is made to
cover the running expenses.
Further details of all the opportunities
open to you will be explained on your sailing course.
